ROONEY MARA – “THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO”
This was one of the hardest decisions I had to make all week.
I really struggled in my choice here between Mara and Viola Davis.
On the one hand, you had an actress who completely lost herself in a part. I bet to people who know Mara, they could barely even recognize her as Lisbeth Salander. But on the other, with Davis, you had an actress who was really able to dig deep and turn in a great emotional performance… she called up all kinds of feelings and put them on display for the audience’s benefit.
In the end, I had to go with Mara. Even though a lot of the “WOW” involved comes from the writing – she’s been dealt a loaded hand – Mara really nails it. On the one hand, she’s been given this incredible character to play that audiences are going to absolutely be blown away by, but on the other hand, the character is emotionally stunted. So since her character is stoic and inexpressive, Mara is forced to keep her cards close to the vest. Express without… fully expressing, if that makes sense. And yet she does it. She completely gets across the concept of a person who’s been tormented, and is so protective of herself and her feelings that she doesn’t show them to anyone…
At times in the film, she is completely vulnerable. And at others, she’s a vindictive demon. Through it all, she’s got an emotional moat around herself that is so thick she barely ever allows the audience through. Yet she does. In glimpses and flashes and just the right doses and amounts to be perfect.
Atop of all of which, she gets naked in this movie in a way that can only be described as “fearless”. I mean, look, the part certainly called for it, those scenes are integral to the themes and to the character. But damn! I wouldn’t want to film some of those sequences, geez! I wonder if she had to knock back a shot or two first, you know?
So after all is said and done, this was an incredible part, yes.
But she did an incredible JOB as well.
All of these women were incredible this year. Especially Davis. Her “Ain’t you tired?” speech made me sit up straight and go “Whoa.” But the others too. I swear, Mulligan did more with less dialogue than I can even tell you about. You’ll have to see it for yourself. Charlize created a great character, and then worked it like a pro all throughout “Young Adult”. And of course, Wiig was a revelation in “Bridesmaids”, I hope she continues to bring us high calibre performances like that going forward.
But Mara was unforgettable. She’s the actress who played the part we’ll still be talking about ten years from now.
So she’s our winner of the 2011 FMR MAJOR Award for Best Actress.
What do you think? Did I rob one of these fine ladies? Were you happy with my choice or did you think NOOO!! Let me hear it, I had a really tough call here!
