Tossin’ It Out There: Who do YOU think is the greatest movie hero ever?

As I’m sure everyone knows by now, a little movie called “The Avengers” opens this weekend (here in the States at least, Grrrrr). In it, a group of heroes band together to fight a common enemy.

In the comics, “The Avengers” are often tagged “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”. But what about in the world of movies?

AFI has Atticus Finch as their number one hero of all time, followed by Indiana Jones and James Bond. So you can see there’s a wide range of possibilities to consider. The list is pretty long

From superheroes, to policemen, to sports stars and war heroes, there have been thousands and thousands of movie protagonists over the years. From regular people called on to do extraordinary things (Chief Brody) to space-faring cowboys (Han Solo). Detectives (Clarice Starling), dock workers (Terry Malloy), dissidents (Juror #8). Famous leaders. Patton. Gandhi. Moses. There is virtually an inexhaustible list.

So what do YOU think? Who is YOUR Favorite Hero or Heroine? Are you partial to integrity and honor? Is world saving a prerequisite? Maybe you need someone with a little flash and pizazz. Let’s hear it!

Who is YOUR favorite movie hero?!

  1. I have a lot of favourite movie heroes but the latest one for sure is Robert Downey Jr. *droooool*

  2. This might be an Asian thing, but I’m going to say Mr. Miyagi. I’ve always thought that my dad resembled his mannerisms. So, in a weird way, I inadvertently said my dad was my hero. WTF. Okay, take 2…

Indiana Jones. Because he uses both book smarts and common sense, plus that whip and hat is a nice touch.

    • LOL. I don’t know why it has to be an Asian thing. Miyagi was awesome. And a war hero. And a local hero. So that’s cool.

I dont know your Dad though. LOL.

I blame Ryan, but I’m going to have Jimmy Stewart Indiana Jones in my head all day now.

[Jimmy Stewart] SNAKES! Now, w-w-why did it have to be SNAKES?! It couldn’t have been some other form of… reptile…? [/Jimmy Stewart]
:D It cracks me up. Dont mind me. I have to find ways to amuse myself.

      • I can’t speak for anybody else, but I for one regularly start imitating Jimmy Stewart at inappropriate moments, so it suits me just fine. :D

      • [Jimmy Stewart] Oh, Marcus. W-W-What are you trying to do, scare me? You sound like my m-m-mother. We’ve known each other for a long time. I don’t believe in magic, a lot of superstitious HOcus POcus. I’m going after a find of incredible historical significance, you’re talking about the b-b-boogie man. Besides, you know what a cautious fellow I am. [/Jimmy Stewart]

      • Oh god.

        LOL…

        AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH ha hahaaha.
        :D

Oh thats a good one. Thats really way too funny. Oh man. This is why I do all this shit, right here. It really is. LOL
        :D

    • Man, when Miyagi revealed that his wife and kid in the internment camp, it was heartbreaking. It was the most solid character moment in all of the Karate Kid movies, including the new one. Heck, the Jackie Chan version, where he lost his family in a car crash, just does not compare.

  3. I like the dark brooding, don’t really want to be a hero types, so here’s my favorites

Riddick, Batman (Christian Bale), Selene and Tyrion Lannister. Except for Batman, not sure they all fit in your hero category but they do save something and stand up for their beliefs, whatever they may be.

    • I would object at Tyrion Lannister because he’s not from a movie, but… he’s Tyrion Lannister, the coolest character on TV right now, bar none. LOL

Riddick and Selene huh? I guess you do like ‘em dark and brooding. LOL

      • I’m evil, what can I say. Of the Avengers, my favorite would Iron Man played by Downey Jr, just because he’s sarcastic, doesn’t play well with others and likes to break the rules. Now if I was a super-genius billionaire, that’d be me.

It does help that Selene is just HOT.

  4. 1. Maximus from Gadiator
    2. Mal Reynolds from Serenity
    3. D from Vampire Hunter D
    4. Rambo from Rambo 4
    5. Sam from Lord of the Rings
    6. John McClain from Die Hard
    7. Hal Moore from We were Soldiers (A real hero)
Plus, most of what’s been mentioned!!

    • Bonus points for being the first to name drop John McClain, I was wondering where he was today…

I like how you specify Rambo 4 when you picked Rambo. :D No “Goat Games Rambo” from Rambo 3? LOL! :D

  5. Batman. Why? Because he’s the hero we deserve, but not the one we need right now.

As for what version, honestly, even the Nolan movies are great, I’m gonna go with Kevin Conroy from Batman TAS, and who also played him in the Mask of the Phantasm movie, so it counts. I can’t think of any hero who left a stronger impression on me as a child.

I mean seriously, how can you not love him?

  6. Ah! No fair throwing Atticus Finch in there. That … that totally makes anyone sound shallow for picking anyone else.

Serious movies aside, I would personally pick The Rocketeer just because, dang, he’s so earnest, he fights Nazis, and he’s total pals with Howard Hughes (played by the greatest man to play Howard Hughes ever, Terry O’Quinn).

Also, John Wayne in Rio Bravo. Because that was a solid movie full of straight up heroism.

    • “Rio Bravo, now THAT’S a movie”, Clarence Worley, True Romance.

      Nice call…

You left out the fact that the Rocketeer dates Jennifer Connely in her ungodly beautiful prime! :D

I hear you on Atticus Finch, I just did a write up on To Kill a Mockingbird a few weeks back and the term that got tossed around frequently in the comments was “Paragon of Virtue”

Hey, thanks for posting up… and nice mask! LOL :D

  7. Greatest movie hero ever? What a great question! Man, this takes some thought, but I initially will have to say that I do like the choice of Juror #8 in Twelve Angry Men. But one of my faves also has often been Tom Hanks in Saving Private Ryan.

This is a toughie man. I still don’t have a for sure answer.

      • haha. true man. and thanks for all the support on the project! Spider-man is still my favorite superhero, but perhaps, in his story, Uncle Ben is the true superhero as the driving force and inspiration of all Spidey does! hmm.

The Avengers are great, but none of them…for me…would still take the title of “Greatest Movie Hero Ever.” But, this will most likely be the greatest superhero movie ever though!

  8. So many to choose from! But I guess one of the reason Gladiator is one of my very favorite movie is Russell Crowe as Maximus. Indeed, honor, courage and commitment in life are three of the greatest traits a man can have in my view.

A hero doesn’t have to save the world or even save a life, a hero can be the father quietly going on to do what it takes to provide for his family even if that means doing demeaning or dead end jobs.

    • I think Maximus has gotten more mentions today than any other character.

Thats unofficial, I’m not gonna count… but I’m telling you, he’s got at least five “votes”, easy.

  9. If you are talking super hero, it all began for me with Christopher Reeve as Superman. The first two movies were the first experience I had with movie super heroes and special abilities. I think it tempted more kids to put on a cape and jump off their roof.

More recently, my favorite is Ironman. Was never a fan of the comics and didn’t really know much about the story until Robert Downey Jr. brought him to life. The first Ironman film I got thru Netflix and believe I watched it like 6 nights in a row. Kept the disc for like a month and watched it several more times. It was that good and he was perfect for the role. It took the ordinary person with special abilities to a new level, even more so than Batman to me. (Blasphemy)

As far as just a movie hero, James Bond hands down. Followed by Indiana Jones.

    • There you go Jason, James Bond (Bond theme playing in background…)

Reeve was great as Superman, totally iconic. He fit that role so well, that now we think of him when we think of that character.

I dont think its blasphemous to choose Iron Man over Batman as far “ordinary person with special abilities”… I can see that.

I might not agree 100%, but I can see that. :D

  10. I think Creasy (Denzel Washington) off the film Man On Fire, a little bit of a strange choice I know but he trades his life for that of a young girl, does that make him heroworthy? It does in my mind

    • Sure!

Double bonus points for allowing me to bust out this Christopher Walken line!

“A man can be an artist… in anything, food, whatever. It depends on how good he is at it. Creasey’s art is death. He’s about to paint his masterpiece.”
:D Great line. Walken is awesome. So is that movie, Patto

      • One of my favourite movies ever and you are right Christopher Walken is awesome and that line is brilliant, very well written and I don’t think anyone else could have said it more perfectly than Walken

    • LOL. He’s been getting a lot of play here.

      Especially as Jimmy Stewart.

[Jimmy Stewart] There’s a b-big SNAKE in the plane, Jock! [/Jimmy Stewart] :D

I’ve been having a lot of fun with that.

  11. Why of course I agree w/ AFI’s pick, I mean it’s Atticus Finch!! My #2 choice would be Christopher Reeve’s Superman. Just like Peck w/ Atticus, it’s impossible to separate the actor w/ the role somehow. Reeve shall always be Superman to me :)

    • Ha! How did I know you’d have Gregory Peck’s back? :D Its obviously a solid choice. He certainly did act heroically without a doubt.

Supes was great, too, another very virtuous hero.

No scoundrels for you, huh Ruth? LOL

      • Ahah, au contraire. I actually LOVE Peck as a scoundrel as much as he does in heroic roles. Case in point: Duel in the Sun. It’s a 1945 Western epic where he played the most unscrupulous bad boy ever, as far away from Atticus as you can get :) And Chris Reeve made for a menacing villain in Deathtrap also with Michael Caine.

  12. First choice would have to be John Mclane! Just that quote from Die Hard 4 “Because there’s nobody else to be a hero right now. If there was, I’d let them do it but there’s not so I’ve got to do it!” It’s what makes him that guy!!!

Also Bryan Mills from Taken. You can’t argue with the lengths he goes to to rescue his daughter!

    • My only problem with Die Hard four is they couldnt finish off the Yippee Kai Ai properly. Sucks.

      Elsewise McLane’s awesome.

Bryan Mills had some bad ass moments, but he needs awhile before he can reach those heights I think… to me at least.

  13. Has to be Christopher Reeve as Supes! I truly believed a man could fly and that original still holds up like a mo-fo for me personally! I dig the patriotism of the character which is also why I have a soft spot for Cap! “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE” TONIGHT!
