Tossin’ It Out There: What Was YOUR Favorite Movie in 2012?

untitledHappy 2013, everyone! 2012 is officially in our rearview mirror!

Now is the time to look back at the year that was. Everyone everywhere is posting their end of the year best and worsts and top tens (I’ll be posting my plans tomorrow), and I figured I’d give FMR commenters their say!

What was YOUR favorite movie of 2012? Didn’t have to be seen in the theatre… but, let’s stick with the 2012 releases, though!

It was a huge year for movies. My top 10 list could easily (very easily) be a top 15. Somewhere along the line some excellent movies are going to fail to make the cut. How about you though? What was YOUR favorite? I know some people will be anxious to share more than one, that’s fine, feel free. But I’d like to hear everyone’s opinions on the best movies of the year, so let’s have ‘em!

What was YOUR favorite Movie of 2012?

  1. My Top 5 of 2012: 1. The Hobbit 2. The Avengers 3. Dark Knight Rises 4. Les Miserable 5. Wreck-It Ralph

    • I’m with you up through 2… Can we say that? LOL. I had some issues with TDKR and Les Mis, but they’re both solid at least.

The Hobbit and the Avengers were both great, though. I just watched the Avengers yesterday, and it’s so much fun. There’s so much humor throughout. Plus the action scenes are great. I think its an awesome flick. :D

  2. Oof, what a question. There were so many!!! My top 5 though: Dredd, The Hobbit, Skyfall, TDKR, and Prometheus. There, I did it. And I’m pretty sure SOME of those will make it into your list. Or at least they’d better ;)

    • Yeah, a couple will. LOL ;)

Not that %$&#ing Skyfall movie, though. GOD…. LOL (I kid, of course)

      Yeah, I knew in advance that this question would lead to me seeing a ton of people saying TDKR… I just… didnt care for it that much, honestly. [Shrugs}

Dredd is kind of a cool choice there though. Wont make my top ten, but I really dug it, and its definitely one of those picks where you can claim “Biggest Fan Of”, which is always cool. :D

      • Oh good, I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who didn’t care for TDKR! I’ve been getting so much hate for including it in my worst of the year list. XP

(I know we’re not alone, it’s a very polarizing movie, but we do seem to be greatly outnumbered, lol. I take solace in the fact that several of my favorite reviewers had the same issues with it as I had though, so I’m not just blowing smoke outta my ass, haha!!!)

  3. I know you don’t agree but Les Miserables was my top movie of the year! Saw it yesterday and man, was just amazing! Made NYE early afternoon turn into a cry fest. Can I put a favorite short? Because I loved La Luna! Love the Lorax also!

    • Yeahhhhhh… I’m not on board with that one.

You’re not alone though, I’ve seen that on a couple of top tens so far today… so it’s like like a “Crazy Talk” answer or anything :D

If you’re ever talking crazy Kim, don’t worry, I’ll call you out on it :D

  4. As Odd As It May Sound, My Favorite Flick Of The Past Year Was “THE GREY” By Waaaaay Far. I Found It Amazingly Lovely, All The While Remaining Intense And Brutal. It Made Me Smile AND Tugged At The Ole Heartstrings.
OH, And I’d Still Have Liam Neeson’s Baby.
    That Is All.
    Carry On. ;) hehehehe
    -B.

    • No, man, that’s not odd. “The Grey” will earn an honorable mention from me Fo Sho. ;) I had it on my top ten candidates list all the way down to this month… It did finally get bumped, but its a worthy flick, without a doubt!

  5. Ha ha! Silver Linings Playbook was my favorite, but SKYFALL was a very close second. Also really liked The Master, Argo, Django, Moonrise Kingdom…. basically I enjoyed every movie I saw except for Flight. I had lots of problems with that one. All the others, though, I liked even if I maybe though they could have been done better.
    Can’t wait for your lists!

    • All good choices, and I agree with you on Flight, as well. I’m seeing it pop up on a couple of top ten lists and I’m like, really? Flight? Eh. [shrugs]
:D And cool. I’m gonna hold off til next week in order to try to work Zero Dark Thirty in if it’s worthy… but when I finally kick it off, it’ll be a blow out. I go overboard, if you can imagine such a thing. LOL

    • LOL As if you need my permission or some shit. :D Heh.

But actually, yeah, I do. I think all three of those are top ten for me as well. I’ve got a tough couple of cuts left to make, and then if Zero Dark is as good as everyone is saying, I’m really screwed, LOL. But those are three of the best movies this year no doubt. :D !

    • I hate hearing that, LOL, cause I’m sure that means it must be good. Which in turn means another tough cut from my current top ten. :( Eeeesh. Gettin tough, man!

All three others were great, too. Crowded, crowded field this year.

Zero Dark was that good huh? Damn. :D

  6. The Avengers was definitely my favourite this year. Of other movies I’ve seen, Cabin in the Woods, Wreck-It Ralph, The Grey and Hunger Games were good, or at least, not utter disappointments. I guess that’d be my top five. Chronicle was worth a mention because it was at least as good as I expected, which is rare, even though I didn’t expect much.

I’m expecting Looper and Django Unchained to knock Hunger Games and The Grey off that list, when I get to see them.

    • Chronicle made my “Most Surprising” list, that flick was actually pretty good for a movie I had no expectations for whatsoever.

I’m big on “The Avengers”, too, that movie was incredible. Whedon crushed it :D

I liked The Hunger Games and Cabin, too… I just thought “Cabin” got overrated… :(

And Looper and Django were both great, definitely :D Definitely awesome flicks.

  7. Ah why can’t you reveal your list yet?
Any i havent seeen any dark knight/batman movies and I don’t plan to either!!! Sorry, but those films just don’t inerest me too much…they really don’t intrest me AT ALL!! Sorry!! It’s just my opinon!!!
Anyway, my top 5 movies so far are really tough!!
The reason I say so far is because I am waiting to if Zero Dark Thirty will my Top 10 Best Movies of 2012!!
I know…I know ..Zero Dark Thrty was in theaters in limited release on
December 19th in 2012!!! This film was not released in my theater yet(from where I lived)!! This will come out on January 11th!! So because it was released on
December 19th in tlimited release LAST YEAR, it is REALLY A 2012 film!!
I want to see if Zero Dark Thirty will make my list after I see when it comes out to my theater(from where I live) on January 11th!!!
Sorry for the long explanation, but here is my listso far!
    5. Wreck-It Ralph:Oscar-Nomination-Chances: Best Animated Film only!!
Wreck-It Ralph COULD win best animate film, but I don’t THINK it will WIN, but, again, it COULD MAYBE AND POSSIBLY BE nominated for Best Animated Film!!!
    4. Pitch Perfect
    3. Silver Linings Playbook:Oscar-Nomination-Chances: Best Picture,
Best Director: David O. Russell, Best Actor:Bradley Cooper,
Best Actress:Jennifer Lawerence and Best Supporting Actor:Robert DeNiro
    2. The Hunger Games
    1. Argo:Oscar-Nomination-Chances: Best Picture, Best Director:Ben Affleck, Best Supporting Actor(s): Alan Arkin and John Goodman, Best Orignal Screenplay

    That’s my list, what’s your’s Mr.Fog?

    • My top ten is still a week off. I decided to postpone it a week so I could see if I could see “Zero Dark Thirty” (same as you) and have a complete listing. :D Trust me, starting next week, everyone will get more 2012 “Best Of”s than they want to out of this place! Lol :D

I hate the whole “Limited Release” thing, it really irks me…

Meanwhile though, those are four solid films… and Pitch Perfect :D LOL.

Wreck it Ralph has a strong, strong shot at best animated, Argo and Silver Linings are certainly in the awards season mix, and Hunger Games was one of the biggest hits of the year. I thought it was a really good movie, too!

  8. My top 5-(1) Les Miserables (2) Skyfall (3) Django Unchained (4) Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (5) The Avengers. My big problem now is coming up with the next 5.

  9. Oh, my top 3 is still TDKR, Killer Joe and Looper. I haven’t seen Zero Dark Thirty and Silver Linings yet, I think those are the only two that may sneak in in top 5 from the ones I haven’t seen.

  10. I was going to do one movie but it looks like the trend is 5 so here goes:
    1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower
    2. Moonrise Kingdom
    3. Headhunters
    4. The Dark Knight Rises
    5. Beasts of the Southern Wild.

The full list can be found on my site if you’re curious. :-)

    • Peer pressure, right here at FMR. Good stuff, good stuff.

I think I beat you to it though Mark, I read your list and commented this morning… I was glad to see “Beasts” make the cut.

In other news, I liked “Perks”, but I dont see it making my top ten… that one really registered with you, huh?

    • Both worthy. I don’t know that WiR will make my top ten regular films, but it sure as hell is in the top five animated LOL. :D

Avengers was so incredible… just watched it again and had just as much fun with it.

      • I think what tipped the balance for me was that although I had tremendous fun with both, Wreck-It Ralph was able to stand more on its own feet than The Avengers can — of course, I definitely want both for my home collection.

  11. Even after agonizing about it and with the list a few days away the closest I came was a ‘possible’ top three before final analysis. They would be Looper, Seven Psychopaths and Django Unchained.

No top ten for Avengers, Batman or Bond! What an interesting year!

    • Wow, yeah, that would be interesting if none of those made your top ten, Ric. Not any of them? Wow….

Meanwhile, Seven Psychopaths is one of my “on the bubble” films right now. I want to keep it in there so badly, but there’s all these other awesome films that I have to recognize… It’s going to be really tough, especially if Zero Dark Thirty kicks as much ass as Ive been hearing. Then it might just have to go. :(

All three there are excellent though, nice choices.

  12. Ok, first I have to say that 2012 has been a great year for films. There have been tons of really great films this year. So top 5:

    5. Cabin in the woods
    4. Moonrise Kingdom
    3. Zero Dark 30
    2. The Hobbit
    1. The Avengers

But the list of also rans is embarrassingly great:
Lincoln, Argo, Django, Skyfall, Dark Knight, Looper, Life of Pi, etc etc

Any other year any of those might make the top five. Good year to be a movie fan.
