The 2012 FMR MAJOR Awards: The Most Surprising Movie Winner

Most Surprising Movie Winner

Ok everyone, let’s kick off our winner announcements with the winner for Most Surprising Movie! This category celebrates pleasant surprises… those movies that catch you off guard in a good way.

The nominees are: “21 Jump Street”, “Chronicle”, “The Grey”, “Hope Springs”, and “Rise of the Guardians”.

Most Surprising

Click through to see which of these five surprising films was the biggest surprise of the year!

“The Grey”

The Grey

I clearly remember being in the theatre watching this, and realizing that I was literally on the edge of my seat. I had to chuckle at myself, but it definitely made me realize just how into the movie I was!

“The Grey” is the story of a small handful of men who survive an arctic plane crash, only to be hunted by a pack of ravenous wolves. They’re forced to fight for their lives, but they also confront their own mortality in a very meaningful way.

Given its January release date, and the questionable quality of many of the projects that Liam Neeson has chosen to associate himself with in recent years, I never even suspected that this might be good. In all honesty, I was completely dismissive of it prior to actually seeing it. I was more than content to chalk it up as “Liam Neeson fights wolves this time, instead of kidnappers”. But director Joe Carnahan gets solid performances across the board – including from Neeson, who reminds us here why we consider him a great actor. He and the rest of the cast engage in a physical struggle against the wolves, and a metaphysical struggle against death. It all added up to a film that was exciting, yes, but also far more profound than anyone would have expected it to be.

The other films were surprising as well. I watched the trailers for “21 Jump Street” and thought, God that looks dumb. Plus, the track record of movies based on tv shows is pretty awful. Of course, it only turned out to be one of the funniest movies of the year. I didn’t expect “Chronicle” to illustrate just how fun it would be to have superpowers, and then follow it up with a rumination on power. The idea of a senior citizen sex comedy made me cringe, but I should have realized that Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones could have pulled it off. The trailers failed to convey just how fun “Rise of the Guardians” would be, but given Dreamworks track record, maybe I should have expected more than I did.

The GreyLeg LampNone of them were more surprising than “The Grey”. What should have been a disposable action film wound up worthy of discussion of being one of the best films of the year.

  1. I guess surprising is fitting because I was surprised in a bad way with this one the first time around. I guess I’ll give it another go and see if its better for me the 2nd time. Maybe I read into allot of the occurrences, but just didn’t buy into it as most did.

    • Ohhhh. Right. Yeah, You’re the one who hated on it after Tank and I hyped it. LOL. Cant win ‘em all Jay. :D

I dont feel so bad, cause Gelfman liked it after we hyped it, so at the least I’m .500 recommending this one.

Most people are down with it though, I have to say the response is pretty positive to the selection.

  2. OK OK, I’ll see The Grey. I kept putting it off for the same reasons that allowed it onto your most surprising list; January release, Neeson’s all to regular bad picks nowadays etc.
But I’m hearing so many good things about this one that I guess I’ll have to see it!

    • well, dont let us push your expectations too high to the other side that it becomes a disappointment or anything (as a couple of commenters have mentioned) Its a solid, fun flick with a bit more depth than you’d expect.

I’m sure you’ll dig it, you should definitely at least give it a look see!

  4. I haven’t seen The Grey yet but I fully intend to, even more so now it’s picked up such an honour :) And I have BIG love for Neeson (and may have been the only person to both like and defend Taken 2, but let’s not go there…).

  5. I was personally most surprised by 21 Jump Street, but The Grey was a nice little surprise as well. Certainly didn’t expect it to take such the dramatic approach that it did at least.

    • Yeah, that could be the tie breaker right there. I mean, 21 Jump Street was a surprise to me, too (obviously). But at the end of the day it was just good at what it was setting out to be… The grey was a much different movie than what we expected, and good to boot!

  6. I’ve kinda been avoiding this one for a while but based on your vote for Most Surprising (in a good way), I might give it a look! My brother sort of gave away the ending (darn him!) so that’s a big bummer!

    • Literally? I think I’ve only heard of two people that didnt like this movie. You’re one of them. :)

Perhaps you think this belongs more in the most disappointing category? You wanted to SEE Neeson fight wolves? Its cool, man, its cool. LOL

  7. Ever since his wife died, Liam has been throwing himself into a LOT of movies, back to back, non-stop work. I seem to recall him saying, in an interview, it was deliberate and that eventually it will catch up to him and he will have to grieve properly, but all this work is his coping mechanism. The result has been some of his most intense acting ever these past couple years. Has it been one or two? It’s hard to tell because he has about 4 or 5 times as much work as other people would have done in the same time span. But because he is doing so much, he is having some great stuff and some not so great stuff coming out.

  8. I haven’t seen Hope Springs or Rise of the Guardians but based on your other choices, I’ll have to check them out. Think I’d go with 21 Jump Street over The Grey but still a fantastic choice!

    • Thanks! I should have had “Dredd” up there amongst the nominees, too. It was one of the biggest “snubs” of the MAJORS. LOL

Rise and Hope springs are definitely worth checking out, give em a chance!
