Tossin’ It Out There: Recommend a Movie to Everyone!

b^marqueeHey everyone. Today’s Tossin’ It Out there is one I’ve been sitting on for a while, as I figure it’s something that people love to do, especially people who read or write about movies on the net!

Everyone loves recommending good movies to others, whether it’s some enormous summer tent pole movie that they happen to see before everyone else, or an indie gem that they’ve dug up that no one else has even heard of! It’s the most common form of movie discussion, I think… the “Ohhh, you’ve got to see it!”

It’s not necessarily to me, just to anyone in general. Many other people read through the comments every week, what movie would you recommend to them? Or to someone you just met? What film do you feel strongly enough to promote, or… is there a movie you’d like to get more people to see?

So what movie will you recommend? Something you like that everyone else has unfairly overlooked? Something foreign that you think is worth people’s time to track down? Maybe something classic – a movie that time forgot!

Whatever it is, let’s hear it! What movie would YOU recommend?

.

NOTE: For this thread, it’s ok if you’d like to link to a review you’ve done, I can understand that, and it fits well here with the discussion. So it’s ok, here! But please, outside of threads where I expressly clear it, remember, posting links to your own stuff without permission is… gauche. ;)

  1. cool idea, Fogs!

I’d highly suggest seeking out the recent Ken Scott film ‘Starbuck.’ Just came out, and I posted about it on my page, but if you want to go in not knowing too much about it (like I did), and how I think it’s best enjoyed, check out the review afterwards. it’s pretty damn funny and rather touching, and i’m pretty sure far too overlooked. :)

    • It must be, I’ve never heard of it! Any relation to Battlestar Gallactica [/Smart Ass]

You can post a link to your post if you want, Tom, I figured people would want to reference their reviews here ;)

  2. Well, since I’ve already recommended Return to Me to you Fogs, I’d go with an underrated foreign movie gem Dear Frankie (trust me, Mark Walker would vouch for it too). No, it’s not only because GB is in it, but he’s certainly one of the highlights! ;)

  3. I’ve got to go with Everything is Illuminated. It’s an adaptation of a Safran Foer novel about a young Jewish American who goes to the Ukraine find the woman who helped his grandparents escape the holocaust. It is absolutely hilarious but also devastatingly sad with an amazing twist. Oddly it stars both Elijah Wood and Eugene Hutz (front man of the band Gogol Bordello), who was hired when he turned up to do some of the music and entranced director, Liev Schrieber.

  4. I just watched Upstream Color, the second film by Shane Carruth of Primer fame.
It was incredible, easily the best film I’ve seen from 2013, and better than Primer (also more accessible).
I highly recommend it, Carruth is on his way to becoming one of the most unique and talented American filmmakers out there.

    • I havent seen Primer, but I’m about to watch it for a reader’s recommendation post. I’m hoping I get to see Upstream Color before the year is out though, because I’ve been hearing nothing but great things about it.

Thanks for the recommendation, I’m going to keep my eyes peeled for a chance to check it out!

  5. I always find myself telling people to see C.R.A.Z.Y., a French-Canadian coming of age story about a young gay man growing up with 4 brothers in deeply Christian Quebec during the 60s and 70s. It’s funny, quirky and heartwarming. It’s also available on Netflix, I believe!

  6. Hey Fogs, having watched Richard Linklater’s Before Midnight just yesterday, I wonder if you have seen the Before trilogy yet (perhaps you have), ’cause I didn’t see any reviews about it on your site.
