Tossin’ It Out There: Recommend a Movie to Everyone!

b^marqueeHey everyone. Today’s Tossin’ It Out there is one I’ve been sitting on for a while, as I figure it’s something that people love to do, especially people who read or write about movies on the net!

Everyone loves recommending good movies to others, whether it’s some enormous summer tent pole movie that they happen to see before everyone else, or an indie gem that they’ve dug up that no one else has even heard of! It’s the most common form of movie discussion, I think… the “Ohhh, you’ve got to see it!”

It’s not necessarily to me, just to anyone in general. Many other people read through the comments every week, what movie would you recommend to them? Or to someone you just met? What film do you feel strongly enough to promote, or… is there a movie you’d like to get more people to see?

So what movie will you recommend? Something you like that everyone else has unfairly overlooked? Something foreign that you think is worth people’s time to track down? Maybe something classic – a movie that time forgot!

Whatever it is, let’s hear it! What movie would YOU recommend?

.

NOTE: For this thread, it’s ok if you’d like to link to a review you’ve done, I can understand that, and it fits well here with the discussion. So it’s ok, here! But please, outside of threads where I expressly clear it, remember, posting links to your own stuff without permission is… gauche. ;)

Tossin’ It Out There: Who’s YOUR Favorite Movie Comedian?

ComediansI have comedy on the brain somehow, today, and so I thought today we should turn our discussion towards movie comedians (or comediennes).

Who’s YOUR favorite? Do you lean towards the classics? Is it a duo or a troupe? Someone current like Will Ferrell or Zach Galifianakis? Or someone classic like Laurel and Hardy? Can we get some love for Peter Sellers today? Or will the usual suspects like Jim Carrey and Eddie Murphy rise to the top? Will we get any female comics breaking through? How about the immortal Madeline Kahn? Or maybe Melissa McCarthy, who is currently atop the comedic movie world?

Everyone has a film star or two that really crack them up consistently, who’s YOURS?

Let’s hear it! Who’s YOUR Favorite Comedian?

Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Sequel?

iron_man_threeThis Friday sees the release of “Iron Man 3″, the third film in the Iron Man franchise, and the fifth time Robert Downey Jr. has played Tony Stark (including his cameo in “The Incredible Hulk). It won’t be the only big sequel this summer, either, the slate is full of them. “Star Trek Into Darkness”, “The Hangover III”, “Despicable Me 2″, “Monsters University”, “Fast and Furious 6″ just for starters.

Sequels have come a long way though. Franchises are carefully planned now, and audiences don’t attach half the stigma to them that they once did. Once upon a time, the question was “Which sequels are better than the originals?” Nowadays, the second installment in a franchise is often expected to be the best.

There are no shortages of sequels out there. Many of them are great. What’s your favorite? Will you go old school with “The Godfather: Part II” or “The Empire Strikes Back”, or something more modern, like “The Dark Knight”? How about one of James Cameron’s noted sequels, “Aliens”, or “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”?

There are hundreds to choose from, and the choice is yours.

So let’s hear it! What’s YOUR favorite sequel?

Tossin’ It Out There: Who’s YOUR Favorite Director?

alfred_hitchcock[Alfred Hitchcock voice] Good morning. [/Alfred Hitchcock voice]

Yesterday’s “Rear Window” post brought some of the comments around to Alfred Hitchcock and his directorial prowess. That put it in my mind to turn this week’s discussion topic to the subject of directors.

Who’s your favorite? Will it be one of the big names, like Spielberg, Scorsese, Kubrick, or Hitchcock himself? Or will it be some of today’s auteurs, such as Paul Thomas Anderson or Darren Aronofsky? How about the Coen Brothers? Or Quentin Tarantino? I’m sure that everyone has a director or two whose projects they eagerly anticipate, or whose filmography they’re checking off like a check list.

Which is (are) YOURS? Is there a director who speaks to you more than others? Is there anyone you think can absolutely do no wrong?

Let’s hear it! Who’s YOUR Favorite Director?

Tossin’ It Out There: Plug Your Blog

plugOk, everyone, here we go! Once again, Fogs flirts with folly, as I decide to live on the wild side and open this thread up to people link dumping and plugging their own sites!

In light of my second straight nomination for Best Community Builder, and stolen from following 3Guys1Movie’s last “Hump Day Have Your Say” topic, where they courted links and requested blog recommendations, I felt it might be a good idea to do some community building and let bloggers have a chance to tout their own sites. Hopefully, it will give us all a chance to find some more blogs and get to know each other a little better.

Could this blow up in my face? Yesssss, yes, it could. LOL :D I can easily think of three or four ways this could wind up in disaster.

Here’s the catch! If you drop a link to your blog (and you can be as verbose as you like in trying to entice visitors) YOU HAVE TO BE ON YOUR HONOR YOU WILL VISIT ANOTHER BLOG POSTED HERE! (Preferably one you’ve never visited before.) I think it’s only fair, and if we put that in place, it will up the chance of people actually visiting others, and seeing some actual referals out of this!

Now, for those of you who don’t blog, this will be a fine opportunity for you to find other blogs and see what they’re all about. Feel free to comment on any comments that you like, but please, let’s be supportive, ok? ;)

So! Let’s hear it. Tell us about your blog. Drop a link to your favorite article, or your homepage. Tell us why you started blogging, or why you keep blogging, or what you hate about blogging, it’s up to you. Dont say anything, and just dump a link! That’s fine too. For everyone that reads and visits, let’s show that FMR Community spirit by taking a minute and clicking through and visiting some new folks!

Ok, that’s it! Let’s have at it! Plug your blog!

Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Biopic?

42With “42″ upcoming this weekend, I thought that it might be a good time to ask about biopics. Biographical movies… those films that tell the story of historical figures and actual people.

Whether they’re biographies of political figures, such as “The Iron Lady”, “J. Edgar”, or “Nixon”, sports figures, such as “Cobb”, “The Babe” or “Ali”, or musicians, such as “Ray” or “The Doors”, Hollywood has mined the lives of the famous and the historically important for stories ever since they began making movies.

It doesn’t have to be limited to a birth to death straight up biography, either. Recent films such as “Hitchcock”, “Lincoln” and “Moneyball” which tell the true story of a brief period in someone’s life are fine as well. (although I reserve the right to use “What’s YOUR Favorite Movie Based on a True Story?” in the future ;) )

So what’s YOUR favorite? Is it Kingsley’s “Gandhi”? Or Denzel Washington’s “Malcolm X”? There are movies you wouldn’t think of right away that should be considered… “Goodfellas” is pretty much a biopic of Henry Hill, and “Braveheart” is based on the life of William Wallace.

There’s plenty to choose from, but here’s a listing on Wikipedia if you need help!

Let’s hear it! What’s YOUR favorite biopic?!

Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Sci-Fi Film?

large_forbidden_planet_blu-ray_8Alright, everyone. Inspired by the underwhelming “The Host” this past weekend, I thought it would be a good time to discuss GOOD Science Fiction movies.

Sci-Fi movies have a long lineage, dating all the way back to the earliest days of film, so there should be no shortage of choices for everyone.

It’s also a broad genre, encapsulating movies that seem to be more fantasy films set in space, such as “Star Wars”, or action movies set in space, such as the most recent “Star Trek”, to movies that are based around hardcore science and scientific endeavors. Any type of movie involving an alien is deemed Sci-Fi, from “Close Encounters” to ”The Thing”.

So with so much to choose from, what will you choose? “Blade Runner”? “Dark City”? “Total Recall”?

Let me hear it! What’s YOUR Favorite Sci Fi film?!

Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Big Dumb Action Movie?

Olympus has FallenIn honor of “Olympus has Fallen” and “G.I Joe Retaliation”, and to welcome back all our regulars who were scared away by yesterday’s MTESS (LOL), I thought we’d turn our attention to action movies in this week’s discussion.

I thought, however, that a straight up “What’s your favorite action movie” would turn into a debate between “Die Hard” and “Raiders of the Lost Ark”, so let’s add a twist… let’s explore that sub layer of movie that, like “Olympus Has Fallen”, you know are stupid, but you enjoy watching them anyways.

There’s absolutely no shortage of those, and it will broaden the choices up beyond “Die Hard” and “Raiders” (which aren’t dumb). If someone wants to select “A Good Day to Die Hard” though, be my guest!

So what’s YOUR favorite? Will you reach back to something from the heyday of Stallone and Schwarzenegger, or will you choose something a little more recent, like, say, the first “G.I. Joe”? Maybe you’re a Michael Bay fan, there’s so many in his oeuvre that qualify! :D

Ok, let’s hear it! What’s YOUR favorite big dumb action movie?!

Tossin It Out There: Who’s YOUR Favorite Movie Monster?

teen-wolf-teen-wolfAlright, everybody, how’s it going?

As I’m sure everybody knows, I spend the weekend watching some terrible, terrible movies. I made it through, but certain movie elements need to be redeemed in my eyes… one of which being movie monsters.

From the classic movie monsters to the animated monsters of Monsters Inc, there’s a lot of cool movie monsters out there. Scary ones, funny ones, creative ones… they’re not all as bad as the ones I spent Sunday with!

Who’s your favorite? Do you lean towards the funny? Like, Slimer from Ghostbusters? Or the terrifying, like the cave creatures in “The Descent”? How about giant monsters, like in “Cloverfield”? It’s wide open, let’s hear it! In order to allow zombies (there aren’t many specific zombies) you can choose monsters who run in packs, if you like.

Just to make this ruling early, Aliens are allowed, but no serial killers, please! ;)

Let’s hear it! Who’s YOUR favorite Movie Monster?

Tossin’ It Out There: Who do YOU think is the most overrated?

Halle_Berry_the_CallPurely coincidence that Halle Berry has a new movie coming out this weekend, folks, purely coincidence.

We all have actors and actresses we look at and think, really? Them? Everyone else is making a big fuss, and they keep landing roles, and we just think, really? Them?

In our opinion, said star is overrated. The public and/or Hollywood thinks more of them then they’re actually worth. If they were a stock, it would be time to sell, as you’d be getting more money for them then their actual value.

Who’s yours? Who do YOU think is overrated? It can be someone all time… they don’t necessarily have to be working today. It could be a director if you like as well.

But let’s hear it! Who do YOU think is overrated?
