Dream House

September has a reputation for being a Hollywood dumping ground.

And yet, THIS September, I’ve felt like Ralphie’s teacher during the daydream sequence of “A Christmas Story”, skipping around the room, joyously handing out A++++++s to every movie that came along. “Contagion”, “Drive”, “Moneyball”, “50/50″. All scored grades in the A range with me. It’s literally been a month since I handed out a grade less than an A-. And it’s not just me, the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in that bunch is an 84 (“Contagion”). The other three are all in the 90s.

While I think it’s in the upper tier of Bond movies, by no means do I think it’s a classic movie in general.

It tempts me to create a new category. James Bond: Classic, Cheese, Crap or Pretty Good?

Cowboys & Aliens

I don’t know if calling “Cowboys & Aliens” a disappointment is fair. I really didn’t have high expectations for it, so when I came out of it feeling like I saw a decent movie, what I should feel is pleasantly surprised.

But there’s a lot of talent surrounding this film. And after attending Favreau’s “Visionaries” panel, which he shared with Guillermo del Toro, I really wanted this film to be excellent.

Unfortunately, it’s not. It’s not bad, but it’s certainly not great, and in the end I wound up wishing they had just made a straight up Western instead.
