Taken 2

“I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for a good movie, I can tell you I don’t have one. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I acquired in the first movie in this series, and then was forced to abandon the acting skills I had honed over a very long career. If you stop coming to these movies now, that’ll be the end of it. I can move on, I will not have to make another one. But if you do come to this, and I wind up making Taken 3, I will find you, and I will kill you.”

Reader Recommendations: “Rob Roy”

Hey, what’s going on everyone?

Today, I’m finally launching a new series that I’ve been procrastinating on for a long time, “Reader Recommendations”.

In the little over a year that I’ve been blogging, I’m constantly coming across movies I haven’t seen. Or movies I saw a long time ago and lost in the memory banks. In my various exchanges with everyone, there are recommendations being made frequently… I should check this out, I should check that out. And oftentimes, LOL, I respond with an “I will, I will”.

Well, one way to move that forward is to actually post about them when I watch. Turn the viewing into some “content”. And this series is designed to do just that. I’ll be asking a couple of questions of whomever recommends the movie, give them a chance to link back to anything they may have written on it, and then I’ll share my thoughts on the movie in a review!

First up is our buddy Le0pard13 of “It Rains… You Get Wet”. Le0p did a great piece on this movie awhile back, a very thorough, insightful analysis. I realized that if the movie could inspire that kind of a post from someone, maybe I shouldnt underestimate it. Perhaps I should circle back and check it out.

Battleship

Right up front? This movie is in the running for the dumbest movie of all time.

There are easily twenty to twenty-five points in the movie where you could look at what’s happening onscreen and list ten good reasons why whatever’s going on would be either impossible, improbable, incongruous, or idiotic. And that’s ALLOWING for the possibility of an alien invasion in the first place, I’m not even counting that…

Yup, this script was someone’s Jr. High creative writing assignment, but on the plus side? They blow a lot of shit up.

Wrath of the Titans

“Wrath of the Titans” is truly a tale “full of sound and fury, signifying nothing”.

There are some really lavish special effects – at times, astonishing visual effects, seriously – but the plot is an excuse to string action sequences together, and the characters are carved of wood.

Honestly, if they didn’t come with back stories via being named after people of Greek mythology, the people in this film would have no definition whatsoever.

Now Showing on Cable: “Unknown”

Premiering Saturday night on Home Box Office was this year’s mystery thriller, “Unknown”, starring Liam Neeson, January Jones, Aidan Quinn and Diane Kruger.

It’s the story of a man named Martin Harris (Liam Neeson), an American arriving in Germany with his wife (January Jones) to speak at a biotechnology symposium. While checking in to his hotel, he gets separated from his wife. The taxi they arrived in took off with some of their luggage, and he hops in another cab to follow after it. When the cab he’s in gets in to a serious accident, he is nearly killed, winding up in a coma for a handful of days.

When he comes to… He’s been “replaced”. Another man is claiming to be him, and his wife is denying she knows him. He has no way of proving his identity, his memory is faulty, and he’s in foreign country with little money and no one he can trust.

How can he prove he’s himself?

Now showing on cable: “The A-Team”

Premiering Saturday night on Cinemax was 2010′s “The A-Team”, starring Liam Neeson, Bradley Cooper, Sharlto Copely, Quinton “Rampage” Jackson and Jessica Biel.

Fair warning. I’m a BIG fan of the tv show.

It happened to hit me at just the right age. Any older and I think I would have been too critical of it. Any younger and I wouldn’t have appreciated its blend of humor, action and colorful characters. As it wound up though, it’s a show that would make my top 5 personal favorites from my youth with ease. If I didn’t have a baby blog to feed, I most likely would have continued to stay away from the movie adaptation in protest.

But, technically, it’s not a remake… the original was a TV show and this is a movie. And I heard enough things about it to make me think it has little chance of disrupting my fond memories of the original. And I DO need post material, so I said, screw it, let’s check it out.

I’m actually glad – well, at least not pissed –  I did.
