For a period of almost a year in 2008/2009, five LA County high school students broke in to the homes of several celebrities, netting almost $3 million dollars in ill-gotten gains. Oddly, however, the burglaries were not entirely financially motivated. Instead of targeting the most valuable items, the group focused on high fashion clothing and accessories in order to emulate the style of the celebrities they worshipped.
Sofia Coppola takes their story and turns it into a film that’s part heist movie, and part critique of today’s culture of celebrity worship, fame and materialism.
It’s been a dozen years since Pixar introduced us to Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan, and now, their belated return comes in the form of a prequel. Traditionally, long layoffs and prequels are both causes for concern.
But have no fear, Pixar lives up to their reputation here, and delivers us a funny, fun family movie full of laughs and genuine warmth.
When the Zombie Apocalypse quickly overruns the world, Brad Pitt risks it all in search of the truth.
“World War Z” is a zombie movie light on zombie action, with some events that will require more than your usual suspension of disbelief. However, given its troubled production and lackluster promotional campaign, it certainly wound up more enjoyable than I expected going in.
Hey everyone, it’s Friday, time for another entry in the Reader Recommendations series!
The Reader Recommendation series is intended to help me formally pursue all the great films that commenters bring up each week in discussion which I’ve never seen. If there’s a movie that comes up that I haven’t seen, but you think I should, email me @ email@example.com or let me know in the comments that you’d like to participate!
This time up, our recommendation comes from Ryan Miller of Rhino’s Horror, who’s recommended “Shoot ‘Em Up”, starring Clive Owen, Paul Giamatti and Monica Bellucci. It sounds pretty off the wall from what I’ve seen and read, so I’m excited to check it out!
“This Is the End” is a riotously funny movie about six comedic stars trapped in one mansion as the Apocalypse unfolds around them. The personalities are funny, the situation is funny, everything is funny.
In a fictional near future, the government has created a night where all crime is legal, including murder. Called “The Purge”, it’s a release valve for people’s rage and way to violently cleanse the country of those who can’t protect themselves. A night where literally “Only the strong survive”.
When the tables turn on a family that’s benefitted from the policy, the result is a home invasion horror movie with a heavy dose of political commentary.
