Tossin’ It Out There: Who Is YOUR Favorite Non-Earthling?

So! With the premiere of “John Carter” this weekend, and a Lambcast on the Alien franchise up, my thoughts got turned to beings of an extraterrestrial nature.

There are 748,312 movies listed on IMDb involving space, beings from outer space, aliens, etc (factually incorrect). It got me to thinking it might make for a good discussion…

I know this thread might risk becoming the Yoda vs. ET thread, but there are dozens upon dozens of outerspace denziens to choose from. Doesn’t have to be creatures either… the Judges say simply “Not born on Earth”. Big fan of Robby the Robot? In. How about the District 9 Prawns? Maybe something scary? The Thing? Gort? The old people lovin’ aliens from Cocoon?

Doesnt have to be non-humanoid! Just sayin’… Superman wasn’t born on Earth, either.

Writers and Filmmakers have often turned their attention to space – it fires the imagination because it’s the great unknown. So there’s a number of candidates out there, they’ve created entire fictional universes…

Which inhabitant is YOUR favorite? Who’s your favorite non-earthling? Let me hear it!!

      • As Rich pointed out, Dr. Who is a Galifreyan Time Lord, possessed of 2 hearts and a regenerative phyiognomy making him capable of being played by as many as 12 different actors! AMAZING! You can be forgiven for not knowing this, although your lack of knowledge does cost griffindor 5 points I’m afraid.

However your lack of knowledge about the hitchhikers guide is a much more serious issue, which I’m afraid will cost you 10 geek demerits and 5 sessions of detention in the school library reading nothing but Douglas Adams books for the next week and a half.

“WTF is a Zaphod Beeblebrox” indeed. *snort* … He’s ONLY the inventor of the pan-galactic gargleblaster for crying out loud! President of the galaxy? Any of these things ring a bell? *sigh* The mice will be so disappointed in you.

      • The movie version of Hitchhikers was ok but I loved what I assume was a BBC series on PBS when I was a little kid. That’s what turned me on to the books.

      • It’s alright. I do believe though… Khan was born on Earth. Genetically engineered human.

I need a Star Trek geek to correct me if I’m wrong.

Spock would qualify… just suggesting. šŸ™‚

      • Hahaha…Zaphod Beeblebrox is pretty great and mostly because of what Sam Rockwell brought to it. Of course I’m partial to the 2005 movie.

  1. Seven of Nine from Star Treck – If you know what I mean šŸ˜‰

More seriously; Cat from Red Dwarf, hands down the coolest cat in the galaxy!

    • Me too, but curious now to hear your feelings about Superman Returns. And have you seen the set pics of Cavill in costume? Looks like a serious departure from the traditional garb.

      For whatever that’s worth.

      • Yes, I’m partial to the Kryptonian one myself šŸ™‚ And I can’t wait to see Cavill as Supes, I think he’d be awesome!

  2. Does D.A.R.Y.L count? Less alien, more cyborg. But Daryl was my childhood sci-fi movie staple, and to this day I cannot find any other character to come even a tiny bit close to the wonderfulness of such a character and story. *loves*

  3. My current favourites aren’t from movies:

    Tali’Zorah nar Rayya
    Garrus Vakarian
    Mordin Solus
    Thane Krios
    Urdnot Wrex

As you can probably tell I’ve been playing a lot of Mass Effect lately.

      • I am impressed (outside of the original Star Wars characters and ET)….I don’t even think I know an actual alien name. haha

      • But it be worth it.

Incidentally, I forgot the Collectors, the Geth, the Reapers, the Quarians, the Turians, the Volus, the Batarians, the Vorcha, the Elcor, the Hanar, the Drell, Liara T’Soni and the Asari, the Krogans, and the Salarians.

But in all seriousness: the Xenomorphs, the Predator, Superman, the Prawns, and everyone in the original Star Wars trilogy.

      • Do you see what you started Cooper?

That said, I “enjoyed” Liara too. LOL. How do you not choose to hook up with the blue space babe? You cant! It brought out my inner Kirk!

  4. I’ll second the Cat from Red Dwarf because Danny John-Jules is a total G. Yeow!

Honestly, District 9 blew me away in 2009, and I have to put Christopher Johnson down as a recent favorite. For a giant bug-like alien, he’s incredibly expressive, and considering how humanity has treated his people he’s also compassionate toward Wikus– more impressive when you also consider the things Wikus does to CJ himself. By the end of that film I’m able to care more about CJ than I am with most of the human characters in the film.

Going back a bit further– Mandy Patinkin. Sam Francisco. Alien Nation. 1988. Booyah.

    • Oh wow, Alien Nation. Geez. Been a WHILE since that movie crossed my mind.

District 9 was incredible, wasn’t it? Just a great concept and a phenomenal job by Copley. Got to see Peter Jackson introduce footage at Comic-Con in 2009. Sorry. Contractually obligated to mention it. There I go, BRAGGING again. LOL!!!

I’m going to fess up to not having seen Red Dwarf. I sidestepped confession time once… not going to do it twice. šŸ™‚

    • Hmmmm…. Hell, huh?

Yes. Sustained. Non-earthling should include alternate dimensions/different planes. Allowed! šŸ˜€

Hellboy is pretty cool. Hellboy II is freaking awesome. Del Toro is ridiculously talented, isnt he? Love that guy.

Unfortunately for Predator, I think I’m going to put it into a hypothetical fight everytime it gets mentioned with a “Good” counterpart. And Superman also kicks its ass. So it’s 0-2 now after also losing to Yoda earlier.

I’m sure Superman would destroy the Aliens too, with one possible exception… how does his skin handle the acid blood? If he’s impervious, case closed. If not? If he’s vulnerable? Big problem I think…

      • Well, put Hellboy up against Superman, who is susceptible to magic, and I think Superman gets wrecked! Yes, they would probably never fight because they are both “good.” But Hellboy has a bit of an attitude and would probably put the smack-down on Superman just because he could.

  5. Talec from Dark Angel aka I Come in Peace… And you go in pieces, asshole. LOL. Oh, Ming the Merciless from Flash Gordon. Jar Jar Binks? NOT haha. The formaldehyde faces from They Live. And of course The Thing.

    • True story. Ahmed Best and Jake Lloyd (baby Annakin) were at a Wizard World New York I attended. Could have gotten either of their autographs or both. Denied. Then they held a panel that you could get into with no lines. Passed on that too. LOL! Noooo interest.

Ming is awesome, we were just talking Flash Gordon last night when I recorded with Tank. We’re talking Sci-Fi. Seems to be the thing this week…

Love me some “They Live”. I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I’m all out of Bubble gum…. šŸ˜€

  6. I have a long list but I will stop at 5. Most of mine are from books and my favorite games. Mine are:

    1. Anders, Mage/Spirit Healer (Awakening)
    2. Sarah Kerrigan, Queen of Blades (Starcraft series)
    3. Galadriel, Lady of the Golden Wood (Lord of the Rings, The Silmarillion, Unfinished Tales).
    4. Zeddicus Zu’l Zoraner (Sword of Truth series)
    5. Kahlan Amnell, Mother Confessor (Sword of Truth series)

    • (Getting squinty eyed)

You know we talk Movies here AIDY!!

I blame PG Cooper for starting with video games…

Alright I can’t be mad at you. But no more books!!

      (Still squinty eyed…)

      • *light bulb goes off*

I did add a movie un-person, in fact, three: Galadriel, Zeddicus Zu’l Zoraner, and Kahlan Amnel.

No wait, the last two are from tv shows. Alright then, I am solid on Galadriel from Lord of the Rings. I can’t believe it has taken me two and a half comments to get this right.

        *light goes dim*

      • Yes, you did have Galadriel, which I noticed. And between that and that fact that you are super cool, it saved you from the judges wrath. Even though you brought books into my movie Dojo. LOL šŸ˜€

You are more than welcome to take as many attempts as you need.

  7. Its another top fiver for me and it helps to limit it to movies;
    Draco the Dragon
    Aliens from Close Encounters
    Aliens from Cocoon

    • Technically, even though he’s a Dragon, wouldn’t Draco be from Earth (Judges are TOUGH today!)

It’s cool though. 4 out of 5 works.

I’m impressed that now when I think of Jeff Bridges, I’m thinking Crazy Heart instead of Lebowski. How whacked out is that? But I definitely thought of Starman playing guitar & getting hammered šŸ˜€ Nice ones Ric

      • I will take the compliment and the 4 out of 5 and thank you kindly! Bridges has such a crazy Career that he is so good that he can be forgotten for Starman.

        Now that is impressive!

  8. I’m amused by the number of non-movie responses on your movie blog for this topic… šŸ˜€

Glad you mentioned humanoid aliens… because I think it’s impossible to talk non-Earthlings in movies and not bring up Star Wars, but there’s nobody in Star Wars that is cooler than Han Solo. Yoda and Chewbacca are cool too, of course.

Other great non-Earthlings… Superman is great (well, the first two movies…), Gozer the Gozerian… I’m sure I can think of more if I put my mind to it.

    • “I’m amused by the number of non-movie responses on your movie blog for this topic… :D”

What, I’m funny to you? I’m here to amuse you? I’m like a clown to you?

LOL. Thanks, always good to have an excuse to break out the Pesci.

Han Solo certainly rules. I’m glad he’s pretty much the only character not involved in any way in the prequels. LOL. I could be wrong, if I am, dont tell me.

And Gozer. How can you get better than that?

      Nimble Little Minx, isn’t she?

      • Han is one of the kids watching in the crowd when Anakin beats the crap out of Greedo.

…Well, no, he isn’t. I’m just messing with you. But it’d be easy to believe Lucas would do that, wouldn’t it? Fortunately, since Han was supposed to be a contemporary of Luke and Leia (early concepts even had him as “the other Skywalker”, which could have been cool) he would be too young to include in the prequels.

    • Yes, animation does, but its been too long for me to recall the specifics on Heavy Metal. We’re sure that happened on another planet and not alternate Earth or anything?

LOL. You HAVE to love geek discussions like this. LOL. This is… this is what its all about. šŸ˜€

    • Put him down, the soldiers said
I’ll put an arrow in his head
But the bird flew off instead
To save his master on his back she fled

      Her time has come

Riding the bird, high in the saddle
She gets a chance to fulfill the pact now
As the leader swoops from the clouds
She sticks him with the sword, then she throws him down

The enemy killed, the land died
The enemy killed, the land died

To defend, this is the pact
But when life’s scorned and damage done
To avenge, this is the pact

  9. Okay I’ll go with the simple and obvious, E.T. and Luke Skywalker. Most popular, most well known. Maybe because E.T. and Luke are easier to remember than Vapid Beeblebromid!

    • Shocked we’re 40+ comments in and you’re the first to name drop the little Reeses Pieces lover. What an awesome movie, what an awesome character.

Skywalker is great too. Love his character arc. He often gets overshadowed by some of the more colorful characters in the series, but it’s definitely his journey.

  10. I’ll probably go with the Martians from War Of The Worlds although the alien from John Carpenter’s The Thing is very cool.

    • I’m assuming you’re talking 1953 and not the Spielberg one. Could be wrong, thats why I check.

I love “The Thing”. Its such a sloppy mess that it winds up with incomparable charm! Great build up leading up to the final reveal and then… blargggghhh LOL. Great flick, great end. Love it. Love that one.

  11. hahaha. man, this thread has a TON of fun comments Fogs! You always come up with great topics!

I love scifi non-human characters. Let’s see if I can come up with some that weren’t mentioned earlier…in no particular order:

Worf, River Tam, Darth Vader, LeeLoo, Optimus Prime, Riddick, and the Rock Biter! ha!
