Tossin’ It Out There: What’s YOUR Favorite Sequel?

iron_man_threeThis Friday sees the release of “Iron Man 3”, the third film in the Iron Man franchise, and the fifth time Robert Downey Jr. has played Tony Stark (including his cameo in “The Incredible Hulk). It won’t be the only big sequel this summer, either, the slate is full of them. “Star Trek Into Darkness”, “The Hangover III”, “Despicable Me 2”, “Monsters University”, “Fast and Furious 6” just for starters.

Sequels have come a long way though. Franchises are carefully planned now, and audiences don’t attach half the stigma to them that they once did. Once upon a time, the question was “Which sequels are better than the originals?” Nowadays, the second installment in a franchise is often expected to be the best.

There are no shortages of sequels out there. Many of them are great. What’s your favorite? Will you go old school with “The Godfather: Part II” or “The Empire Strikes Back”, or something more modern, like “The Dark Knight”? How about one of James Cameron’s noted sequels, “Aliens”, or “Terminator 2: Judgement Day”?

There are hundreds to choose from, and the choice is yours.

So let’s hear it! What’s YOUR favorite sequel?

  1. I’m going to have to go with Major League II. I enjoyed the first one, but thought the sequel was much better (turns out most people disagree, but oh well). Also, prefer Dead Man’s Chest over Curse of the Black Pearl.

    • Yeahhhhhh… you can count me in with those “most people” on both counts. LOL 😉 Both are decent movies, but the originals are better in both cases, I’d say.

If theyre your favorites, though, theyre your favorites!

  2. I think I’d go with Hellboy 2, at least for ones I doubt will get mentioned much. It’s interesting how that has changed in the past 20 years or so, I wonder where that distinction came about. I think part of it is that sequels used to come with different directors/actors and were just a cash grab on the name of the original (and still happen, Roadhouse 2 anyone?) But at some point, sequels were done that made sense, worked and worked better. I’d also mention Clerks 2, love that movie.

    • Hollywood began to see sequels that made as much money or more than the originals… once sequels began to earn sequels of their own, and Hollwyood saw series stretching into trilogies, they started to pay more attention to the second movies. They sign actors to three picture deals, make sure the directors come back, etc. Before you know it, people stop badmouthing sequels because they dont suck as much.

I’ve boycotted Clerks 2. I never want to watch it. I dont want to see Randall and Dante as 30 somethings, end of story. Hellboy 2 is great though 😉

    • Empire is a great flick. I loved Superman II as a kid, but as an adult, watching it, I saw a lot of issues. Recently though I saw the Donner Cut. Have you seen that one Mark? I think it’s a much better movie (though it, too, still has issues) 😀

  3. Wow, now that is a tough one. You’ve already mentioned a couple of my favourites in T2 and Aliens but I also like Toy Story 2 and Before Sunset. Also, both of the Indiana Jones sequels are great. But not Crystal Skull. Never Crystal Skull.

    • Seriously, did you guys coordinate that? 3 out of the last 4 comments mention “Before Sunset”… I’m getting worn down by all the love. I need to get on that series ASAP. 🙄

I have seen T2, though, of course… LOL

  4. I’m going to have to pick Empire Strikes Back, though this will come as a surprise to no one. 😉 Other sequels I’m a fan of are Toy Story 3 and Spider-Man 2.

  5. I’m going to go with The Dark Knight. A little boring, but honestly I just can’t think of a sequel that blew my mind in a better way. Although, Lethal Weapon 2 is up there – best in the series.
